John is an AITI Chartered Tax Advisor and specialises in VAT.

John joined the Firm in April 2023. Working out of our Dublin and Athlone offices, John leads RBK’s dedicated VAT service offering. He is an experienced VAT specialist advisor and provides support to a broad range of clients. John’s work covers the delivery of VAT-technical and commercially relevant advice to clients on their ongoing business activities and on specific, once off transactions. His clients range from domestic Irish based businesses to international operators engaged in cross border activities, and he advises on the VAT aspects of activities undertaken locally and internationally.

John has over 25 years’ experience assisting a broad range of private sector business and corporate operators, as well as public sector departments and organisations. John has advised extensively on the VAT aspects and associated measures around commercial reorganisations, supply chain/procurement matters, corporate acquisitions, Tax Authority interventions and VAT relevant dispute resolution. John has also provided VAT assistance and support on a large number of property transactions in Ireland, covering single sales or purchases, to portfolio disposals or acquisitions.

VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) 516.89 KB

On 25 March 2025 the ViDA package was published in the Official Journal of the EU marking a pivotal moment for VAT in the EU. ViDA is a set of legislative reforms aimed at modernizing the EU's VAT system to better align with technological advancements and address challenges such as VAT fraud and the platform economy. The ViDA updates aim to create a more efficient and business-friendly VAT system, benefiting SMEs by reducing administrative burdens and compliance costs. Irish Revenue conducted a public consultation from October 2023 to January 2024 to gather taxpayer insights. The consultation emphasised the practical concerns, as well as proposals for real-time digital VAT reporting and electronic invoicing and it is expected that this will be considered when Irish Revenue publish related rules applicable in Ireland. The package will officially come into force on 14 April 2025 with implementation timelines extending into the 2030s.
